The distinctive elements of the institute are summarized below:
INSTITUTIONAL DISTINCTIVENESSThe college aims at making our students holistic beings by emulating the core values of Sikhism ‘Kirat Karo, Naam Japo, Vand Chhako’ – Make an honest living, Meditate, Share with others. In order to follow the tenets in letter and spirit, the college emphasises a blend of skills through the curriculum and a commitment to humanity through community service that goes beyond the curriculum.
Each Academic session begins and ends with Ardas Diwas to seek the blessings of the Almighty and to thank him for his grace in bringing it to a successful completion. It imbibes humility, contentment and compassion in our students.
The third tenet ‘Vand Chhako’ – is assimilated in our students through the service they render during the religious congregation of Jor Mel organised every year in the month of December to commemorate the supreme sacrifice of Mata Gujri, the revered mother of tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh and martyrdom of his two younger sons Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh who laid down their lives for truth, righteousness and faith. Whole-hearted involvement of students, staff and alumni on this occasion motivates them to follow their path. The college organises Langar (free community kitchen) for devotees irrespective of their caste, creed, religion, invoking a sense of unity and equality. Students assist the old and physically disabled to pay obeisance. They also support the District Administration to make special arrangements for approx 3 lakh devotees. Medical camps, Cancer awareness camp and emergency services are organized by NSS and Red Cross volunteers and Alumni Association.
The college strongly believes in giving back to the community. Thus, the institution ensures that the students understand their moral obligation towards the society and make efforts to empower others. All departments through their clubs and societies involve students in developmental activities and to create awareness about economic and environmental issues in the nearby villages. The Lab to Land Programme of the Faculty of Life Sciences helps in the transfer of technology and knowledge to the farmers of neighbouring villages to strengthen them economically and technically.
On the whole, the involvement of the students in community service elevates them towards academic excellence with relevance and inclusion of the marginalised for empowerment. All of the above activities ensure moulding of our students into agents of social change and future leaders through love care and service. Involving all stakeholders in community service reiterate the distinctive character of this institution to serve humanity at large.
